This poem was written in 1994 at a point when I was going through a traumatic time: financial difficulties, 8 funerals in 18 months (including my Dad), and then the worst of all… Losing my horse.<\/p>\n
I felt your breath
\nsoft on my neck
\nmyriad memories
\ntickling my mind like
\nwhiskers
\n\tfalling
\nfrom clippers<\/p>\n
Luminous eyes
\nglazed with the day\u2019s work
\nand the field is
\n\tdust
\nflicking through the stall
\nwashed with bespeckled light
\nand the thrum of horse flies
\nand the stench of sweat
\nand the buzz of Osters
\n\ttrimming, trimming…<\/p>\n
The night is vacant now
\nscents of cedar and straw
\ndrift through the barn into
\n\tmy dreams–
\ntwice-wet feet cross the stream
\nto another\u2019s pasture<\/p>\n
Your eyes–my eyes
\nstare through steel bars,
\na stall door of my design
\nlocked against my entry<\/p>\n
