{"id":4050,"date":"2016-08-07T12:04:14","date_gmt":"2016-08-07T16:04:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ceffyl.net\/wordpress\/?p=4050"},"modified":"2016-10-25T12:58:48","modified_gmt":"2016-10-25T16:58:48","slug":"viola-trials","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ceffyl.net\/wordpress\/music\/viola-trials\/","title":{"rendered":"Three viola trials"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I have a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sharmusic.com\/Instruments\/Viola\/Beginning-0--700\/Franz-Hoffmann-174-Amadeus-Viola---Instrument-Only.axd\">Franz Hoffmann Amadeus starter viola<\/a> from <a href=\"http:\/\/sharmusic.com>Shar Music<\/a>. It&#8217;s been a good instrument to get back into playing viola. When I initially got the viola, I took it to a local strings shop for an evaluation. The person who assisted me was impressed with the quality (especially for the price). I replaced the chin rest and the strings. I put Dominant strings on the viola, which, of course, cost almost 75% of the instrument&#8217;s cost. The main flaw in the instrument was that the bridge was too tall. I opted not to have it correct because it was one more thing to fix and I wanted to play! (I would be without the instrument for a week or more.) The higher bridge would make it harder to play and mostly likely I would outgrow the instrument. <\/p>\n<p>Fast forward a year or two. I&#8217;ve been relatively good about playing. Playing the viola became increasingly difficult to catch the right note. I used to play a lot. When I don&#8217;t think about what I&#8217;m doing, I can do a lot more than when I stop and try to figure things out. Simple things become a lot harder, and I knew it shouldn&#8217;t be like that. <\/p>\n<p>Shar Music offers an in-house trial program. Pick one or two instruments and bows, and for $40 you can try an instrument or two (that costs over $700) out for a week. I was sent two instruments: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sharmusic.com\/Instruments\/Viola\/Intermediate-700--2K\/Carlo-Lamberti-174-Symphony-Viola.axd\">Carlo Lamberti Symphony<\/a> ($1250) and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sharmusic.com\/Instruments\/Viola\/Intermediate-700--2K\/Carlo-Lamberti-174-Sonata-Viola.axd\"> Carlo Lamberti Sonata<\/a> ($750) violas. I had originally wanted a European instrument to try but was sent two Lamberti instruments instead. They are both made in China.<\/p>\n<p>I went back to the local string shop to see if they offered the same type of deal. The shop had a Grottano viola in stock that was between $600 and $700. The Grottano viola is made in Romania and has a deeper tone than the Lamberti violas. <\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll post again when I have played them for a week.
