Lumps and bumps on Isis’ skin

Isis has always had skin issues: rain rot, fly bite allergies, scratches, etc. For the most part, these things last a little while, are treated, and then resolve. For the past two months or more, Isis has had lumps under her legs, right where the girth goes. Initially, the lumps did not interfere with the position of the girth. The lumps were slightly in front. However, wearing the girth irritated the lumps. The...

Bragging rights on the Bay Wonder Mare

I’ve been trying to ride my mares more often. Today was a 2.5 hour trail ride on Prize. We baby sat my friend’s four year old gelding. He’s been ridden about the same number of times as Kasane, although is training is farther along. Here is Sylvana riding Renegade: We got back from the trail ride, and I tacked up Kasane. My friend was in the ring with me and offered to take...

A good feeling

I originally started this blog to write about the issues I’ve been having with my various medically challenged animals. Initially it was Basette with diabetes and Isis with insulin resistance. Over the years, I’ve written about every animal I’ve had because they have all had some kind of medical issue. It means so much when someone leaves a comment. Maybe all of the work I do to document what happens with my animals...

[2003] Dew poisoning on Isis’ legs

Just before I started this blog in 2004, Isis had a record year for Bad Things. Okay, not as bad as later years, but up until that time it was Bad. Laminitis, rain rot, sprained tendon, and dew poisoning. A reader asked a question about Isis’ February 2006 case of belly gunk. In addition to her gelding having the same belly gunk that Isis had, he also has a bad case of scratches...

Kasane’s first trot in the ring

Kasane now officially knows how to trot. 🙂 She picked up the cue immediately. We worked briefly in the round pend and then in the big ring. She was good for two times when I asked her to trot. On the third time, I asked her to steer and it confused her a little. (Too soon for that.) So we turned around, walked a little, and then asked her to trot again towards...

Kasane conquers first trail ride

Wow. Two and a half hours worth of trail riding with 10 other horses and the Bay Wonder Mare Junior was amazing. I dismounted and mounted about four times. We went through our first water obstacle (BIG creek: wide but not deep), dealt with several bridges, water along side the trail, deer, and no-see-ums. The worst thing she did was do a four-footed jump and rush forward a few strides when the wind...

Finger update

The cut on my finger has completely healed over on the large entrance wound and the smaller exit wound. My finger is still a little swollen and I don’t quite have full range of motion back. However, the finger flexes enough to hold reins, so that’s all I care about. I still can’t hold a pen and write very well, but that’s why I bring my portable and type. Or write on the...

Tomorrow is the big day…

Kasane’s first trail ride. I’m nervous and worried and excited at the same time. We had a good ride today, even though this was the first time she gave me some grief while I was on her. At one point, we stopped near the gait and I asked her to walk forward. She refused, pinned her ears, tightened the muscles along her back and neck, and tried to bite my foot. I turned...

Kasane graduates to the big ring

Today, Kasane had her first ride in the big ring. I warmed her up in the round pen as usual, and then, while on her, opened the gate and rode to the big ring. She hesitated when stepping out the gate, as it some magical line had been crossed. She walked to the ring walking with a little hesitation. Everything is different with me on her and not next to her. Things she...

Videos of riding Kasane

My friend Zoltan came out with me to the barn on Tuesday and videod a ride on Kasane. It’s in three parts. Unfortunately the first part is sideways. (I’ll fix this as soon as I get the license for my video editing software sorted out.) These rides are very early in Kasane’s training. She’s had maybe 10 rides at this point (including just sitting on her). She’s very relaxed and aware of me...
