Computer Issues

I think my portable is dying a slow, painful death. It now randomly will not boot properly. Upon rebooting, it hangs just after the RAM check for about a minute. An error message appears stating that there is a hardware failure (PXE-E61 to be exact) and to check the hard drive cable. Considering that the hard drive is located underneath the keyboard and the wrist rest of this portable, it is not a...

Writing for Games

Reading Slashdot during lunch and found an article on writing for games. Now this sounds like fun! A way to combine hobbies of writing fiction, technical writing, and playing games. Interview with game writer Related Images:

Doctor Who meets Chain Saw Massacre

According to an article on The Register, Netflick’s copies of series 2 DVDs of Doctor Who have a major error. Viewers enjoying “New Earth,” the first episode in series 2, are periodically treated to scenes from Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Apparently, only the DVDs from Netflicks are effected. Yeehaw! I’ve gotta rent those from Netflick! Related Images:

Gadget Girl

I’m a geek. First one to admit it. I’ve had bosses who haven’t known what to do with me because I am so into technology. I think gadgets are fun and amazing. I am an early adopter of technology. Maybe it’s the science fiction writer in me that loves the gadgets. One of my bosses even called me ‘Gadget Girl’ — always thought it sounded like a great comic strip character. Our heroine...

NGO-In-A-Box

One of the technical writing mailing lists I’m on posted a link to a site with freeware/open source software listings. This site, NGO-In-a-Box, provides a list of open source or freeware software geared towards a specific purpose: audio/video editing, desktop publishing, etc. The Audio/Video site looks excellent. Unfortunately the desktop publishing portion appears to be suffering from PHP and MySQL errors. Related Images:

Firefly as MMORG

According to an article in Wired: “Like Capt. Mal Reynolds stumbling in after a bar fight, the short-lived but much beloved sci-fi series Firefly will soon make an unexpected return, not as a TV show, but as a massively multiplayer online game.” The game is being developed by Multiverse (whose Web site has been slashdotted, so don’t expect to be able to access it any time today). Could be very interesting, depending upon...

Windows Live Local

Apparently another Microsoft project. According to some posts on Slashdot this morning, Microsoft has started a city-by-city project to capture every street. The first two cities are Seattle and San Francisco. It’s an interesting idea, but it makes you wonder. Are they going to edit out every person who might appear in the pictures? Ugly Web Sites That Work

At my day job, we are currently redesigning the corporate Web site. I am responsible for doing most of the coding for the site. During lunch, I have been reading articles on CSS, XHTML, site design, structure, management, etc. Today, Slashdot had a link to an article at Site Reference called “The Surprising Truth About Ugly Websites,” by Mark Daoust. One interesting point that the article makes is that quite a few users...

Linux, linux every where…

My friends consider me a geek because hardware is a hobby; so is software, but that’s another story. Tweaking machines for better performance is fun. Figuring out why a particular setting or chipset works better then another is challenging — and much more enticing then watching Fox News. Two weeks ago the power supply blew on my Win XP box. I’ve done some hardware configuring, but never replaced the power supply. This box...
