Zaurus bites the dust?

Okay, not sure what is going on. I have a 6k running the stock Sharp ROM. I have a 1 gig SD and CF cards installed. Most of my non-critical apps boot from the CF card. I have not installed any new program nor changed any settings. The Z usually sits on my desk or in my purse in its case. I tried to turn the Z on today, and the power button...

Spooky Books

On the list of things that would be cool but utterly useless (except maybe to entertain the cats), was Spooky Books from Things You Never Knew Existed Web site. This set of antique-looking books hold a surprise: the middle book pushes out on it’s own when someone walks by. Accompanied, of course, by spooky sounds. Definitely something that would be great fun during parties. Related Images:

Chore Wars!

Online game where you earn XP for completing chores called, of course, Chore Wars. Earn XP for completing chores around the house. Sign up the household and see who levels first… http://www.chorewars.com/help.php#2 Cute idea. If Mom had used this when we were little, my sisters and I probably would have been more enthusiastic about completing chores. Related Images:

Soft Hyphenation in HTML

You know how a word processor will break a long word at the end of a line? Well you can tell HTML to do the same thing. It won’t automatically break words, but you can use a soft hyphen to define where a word should break. I’ve often wondered how to do that. Jukka Korpela has a good discussion of soft hyphenation in the different HTML specs. Related Images:

Web Standards Update

Great news today! Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) 2.1 has become a candidate recommendation. Finally! It’s only been around for five or six years. Pretty soon it should be a full recommendation. Excellent work! Related Images:

Mailing Lists and Fair Use

In light of the question about when/if to share an email, I put together a brief FAQ on copyright, netiquette, and fair use. I thought it might be useful to include here, in case other people wanted to use it. Please feel free to use this FAQ, so long as it is attributed to Ceffyl. Brief FAQ on Etiquette for Forwarding Emails Is it wrong to forward email from one mailing list to...

iPhone at AT&T and Apple Stores

I used to be an AT&T Wireless customer, prior to the buyout of AT&T Wireless by Cingular (or the merging of the two companies, whichever way it actually happened). Any way, my plan with AT&T was much better than any Cingular offered. The AT&T Wireless experience was okay: helpful salesperson, excited about offering me a reasonable deal. In July last year, I received a letter from Cingular stating that they were going to...

MacJournal Frustrations

Mariner Software, the publishers of MacJournal, have a great reputation. Many people love MacJournal. It’s highly recommended as desktop journaling and blogging software. A friend of my tried it and love it, so I bought it. According to the reviews I had read, MJ works with popular blogging software including WordPress. Sounded like a great way to have a local backup of the posts and be able to write drafts offline. I have...

Delightful Days

Last night, at a sparkly 4:00 AM in the morning, my toilet decided it wasn’t going to flush. The water backed up from under the rim and the base of the toilet. Mopped all of that up and was too frazzled to go to bed. Figured I would write a blog post about it. SQL database gets corrupted. Definitely not a good day. The relatively good news about all of this is that...

Warning on WordPress 2.2

I installed WordPress 2.2 on June 12. Added some new posts. Everything seemed to be going well. Until last night. I had some issues around the house (yay toilet leaks) and blogged about it. While I was in the middle of writing the post, the SQL database got corrupted. WordPress threw an error message that prompted me to install. Everything I tried — restoring the database from backup and upgrading from 2.1.2 to...

Season 3 on Sci Fic

Just saw the first add for Season 3 of Doctor Who on Sci Fi channel. It starts July 6th. Woohoo! I’m so there. Of course, I’ve already watched most of season 3 on the Web… but still. It will be nice to see what is included in the US release. Related Images:

Doctor Who Ups and Downs

On a good side, there is a rumor that the Sci Fi channel will air season 3 of Doctor Who in July. On a spit-nails-or-cry, The Sun has an article claiminng that Doctor Who would be axed after season 4 due to a mass exodus of the executive producer and writer, Russell T. Davies, and other senior staff. This article has since been disputed by an article on The Guardian (registration required), summarized...
