Committee amends, approves “enormous gift” to Big Content

According to Slashdot, this bill also creates “Copyright Cops” with the ability to seize any machine or data used in (or suspected of use in) copyright infringement. The Senate Judicial Committee has approved with some modifications the troublesome Enforcement of Intellectual Property Rights Act of 2008. As it stands, the bill would still deputize the Justice Department to bring civil suits on behalf of Big Content—and then pass any monetary awards won as...

MacJournal Anew

A while back, I documented the trouble I had using MacJournal with WordPress. I have never gotten the silly program to work with WordPress. Ashame, really, because MacJournal is a nice looking application. This week I purchased a copy of the Back to School bundle from Mac Update. MacJournal, and about 10 other applications, came with the bundle. Nice set of software. Some time this weekend I’m going to try and get MacJournal...

Desktop Solution

The guy I purchased the Acer Aspire One from Craigslist also had an OS X desktop system available. He originally quoted me a very good price. However, from the time I bought the Aspire One to when I emailed a few days later about the desktop system, the price had gone up by $150. The system specs were okay, but the sudden price increase put me off. I decided not to get the...

Scientist discovers flaw in Oceanic Carbon dating

It is interesting when something considered as stable as carbon dating gets reevaluated. What might this mean for archaeologists who use carbon dating on artifacts? As a consequence of the findings, changes in 13C/12C records need to be reevaluated, conclusions regarding changes in the reservoirs of carbon will have to be reassessed, and some of the widely-held ideas regarding the elevation of CO2 during specific periods of the Earth’s geological history will have...

Computer Systems and Updates

The one thing I decided to do with the money from the house was to update my computer systems. My portable is three years old (bless its heart) and the desktop, a Mac Mini, is half that age. The Mini been a workhorse and very stable. The little box has been maxed out with 2 gig of RAM. The machine struggles with the software I’m running. My current freelance projects use InDesign and...

I rode!

I rode today! =) Isis and I rode with another person at the barn in the front pasture. It was Isis’ first time there undersaddle. We were both a little nervous. Overall she was good (and would have been better if I had calmed down a little). It was nice to be back on her. I should have a riding lesson next week on Tuesday and Isis is scheduled for a massage too....

Getting Isis in Shape

My posts here have been reduced since Isis has been in NC. I’ve been out to the barn almost every day so I can work with her. Most of her first week was spent lunging and getting her in shape. Her feet were long, so I had to wait until after her trim to work with her under saddle. She was trimmed on Wednesday afternoon by the new farrier. He seems really good....

Art: Beyond Pompeii: Places swallowed by Vesuvius

CASTELLAMMARE DI STABIA, Italy – Over several centuries, millions of tourists have visited Pompeii to acquaint themselves with the cataclysmic eruption of Mount Vesuvius that began on Aug. 24, 79 A.D. But while it’s the most famous eruption site, the ancient Roman city 15 miles south of Naples isn’t the best place to gauge the volcano’s awesome des read more | digg story Related Images:

Chariot find at settlement site

Archaeologists have uncovered a small – but vital – clue to the use of a chariot in Moray. The presence of a chariot (or peices for one) indicates the high status of the people who lived 2,000 years ago in the two roundhouses currently being excavated. A few Roman coins were also found. read more | digg story Related Images:

The ‘peaceful’ Hadrian and his endless wars

Drinking water

Isis hauled beautifully and did very well. She has settled in and seems to be adjusting. She has her own stall and her own turn out paddock. She is up during the day and out at night. I discovered tonight that she doesn’t like the new water. She has been at a barn with city water for the past 10 years (prior to that she drank well water). She will drink water but...
