Finger update

The stitches came out last week on Friday. So far, everything looks good: healing clean without tendon damage. However, there is some nerve damage. The top and inside of my finger feels like it has a perpetual case of Novacaine-like numbness. As the swelling goes down, I’ve regained a little range of motion. I can type again but I still can’t hold a pen very well in my left hand. I can write...

Got out to the barn today and Isis was in a fully sweat and grumpy. Too hot to do anything except groom and hose the girls. # Anyone want an invite to #Glass If so, PM me and I'll send you one. Kitchen: 1. Kim: 0.

“I fought the knife, and the knife won…” Or Stupid Human Tricks — cooking with Kim! Srsly. Don’t separate salmon patties with a steak knife. Use the butter knife that’s been run under hot water. Don’t get lazy just because the steak knife is there all innocent looking. It’s really out for blood. That particular knife never forgot when you used it to shred tape off of boxes. Friday night last week I...

Prize has a grand time

Sylvana, a friend of mine at the barn, and I both have four year olds we are working with under saddle. Our two Arabs (okay, he’s technically an Anglo-Arabian) have the Arab herd-brain: when one snorts the other automatically snorts and looks around. Even if nothing is there. It just takes a snort. Funny to see when a llama is following you around the pasture… Sylvana is taking her four year old, Renegade,...

Riding lesson translates to regular riding

I had a riding lesson up at Mom’s on Saturday. I rode Piccolo (Hanoverian warmblood schoolmaster horse) in a dressage lesson with Lauara, one of Mom’s new instructors. She was very good. She explained how to do a half-pass properly by pushing with my inside leg every time I felt his inside back leg move (i.e., when his belly swung towards the outside). She had me cantering this huge warm blood without any...

Happy birthday to Stella, and a vet visit

Stella is 21 this month. She is the oldest cat I’ve ever had. She has been very healthy and spry for the most part. Since the move to the new apartment, she has been losing weight and not looking as good. She is looking more her age instead of being so kittenish. (She did play with her tail last week in the bathtub. First time she had done that in a while and...

Kasane had her first real ride today

Sylvana, an awesome natural horse trainer (and mentor), met me at the barn after work to help me with Kasane. Sylvana and Chris, the barn owner, have given me tips and suggestions for working with young horses using natural horsemanship methods. I’ve always done traditional training methods and always enjoy learning new techniques and methods. Sylvana watched me work Kasane. The Bay Wonder Mare Junior was frisky at first: she bucked at me...

Back at the barn

After over a week of being away from the barn, I finally got back out there on Sunday. Sunday morning I realized just how much stress I’d been living with because I felt shaky and off kilter. The best solution when I feel like that is to go to the barn. Not to ride, but just to see the girls. Just putting my hand on Isis washes away the stress and everything is...

Moved. Finally.

For the past month, I’ve been packing and coordinating a move. Finally finished the move on Friday, cleaned like mad on Saturday, and turning in the keys to the old apartment on Sunday morning. I used a moving company for the first time: Trosa Moving. These guys were great. It took five guys about 3.5 hours (they estimated 4 hours) to move my stuff from a third floor apartment to a third floor...
