Rainrot season again

Not specifically rain rot, it’s more like the creeping fungus infection that the horses get on their feet when it’s been rainy and muddy. Rajiyyah has it pretty bad on her legs. I picked up her feet to clean then out and the underside of her back leg fetlocks felt crusty. It felt at first like she had a cut back there but it wasn’t a cut. She had nasty scabs that were...

Downstairs bathroom remodel

I’ve been updating the fixtures in the house from brass and fake-looking gold plastic to oil rubbed bronze. I’ve changed out all of the door knobs and removed the towel rods from the walls, especially in the downstairs bathroom. I also replaced the light fixture to match the ones in the upstairs bathroom. I added a hand towel holder in the downstairs bathroom and patched the walls where the 30 inch towel rod...

Happy New Year!

Here’s hoping that this year is an improvement for everyone! Quite a few of my friends had rough segments this year. Learning opportunities abounded and it wasn’t always pretty. Here’s hoping that 2014 turns out brighter. Related Images:

Catalogs and categories of Epona artifacts

A friend of mine recently asked me if the categorization of Epona artifacts used on Epona.net was original to Nantonos and I. The short answer is that, no, every author who has studied Epona artifacts has created their own categories. It’s like organizing a pantry: each cook has a different way of arranging cans so they make the most sense to that cook. Nantonos did the majority of the analysis on the artifacts...

Cleared to ride

I’ve been healing very well from the accident. The physical therapist and my regular doctor have been positive and upbeat about how quickly I’ve been recovering. I have been doing regular exercises and trying to not work too much on the computer. The strain from looking down exacerbates the neck sprain. The good news is that I’ve been cleared to start riding again. Simple stuff, like walking on a trail, but it’s a...

Car search completed

I’ve had a rental car since two days after the accident. The insurance company gave me a few options: sedans, SUVs, or one little red Fiat 500. I have looked at Fiats earlier in the year and thought they were cute, so I used this opportunity to rent one as a prolonged test drive. It definitely doesn’t drive the way I expected. The salesman at the Fiat dealership had bragged about how peppy...

Car go crunch

Last week on Wednesday, I was taking the back way home to avoid accidents on the interstate and ended up in an accident myself. A silver SUV turned left from oncoming traffic across my lane on 54. Major intersection. Lots of traffic. One minute my lane was clear, and the next there was a car in front of me. Car go crunch and snicker-snack. The hood was crumpled, like it is designed to...

Night of the Doctor

BBC has released a mini episode prequel for the Day of the Doctor, which airs next week. This mini episode shows what happens at the end of the 8th Doctor’s life. Finally, Paul McGann is given an official role almost twenty years after the 1996 TV movie aired in the U.S. His Doctor was so happy-go-lucky and was just lovable. I am so glad that he was given the opportunity to do something...

Riding Rajiyyah today

I rode Rajiyyah today for the first time in several weeks. She was surprisingly good. Last time I rode her, the barn owner suggested that I needed to either keep constant contact with her mouth or ride on a very loose rein. After doing some ground work, we tacked up. We started on a loose rein and walked around the arena. She relaxed and seemed to enjoy herself. Her neck was loose and...

Where has Ceffyl been?

Ceffyl has been moving! I bought a cute townhouse. Closing was October 9th. Most of my time in October has been spent packing, getting the new place situated, and cleaning out the old apartment. I had to give a 60 day notice for the apartment complex and pay the lease termination fee (two months’ rent!). I turn over the keys to the apartment as soon as I can get to the apartment complex...

Post-update Ubuntu woes

I posted too soon. We had the system doing updates (including kernel updates). Nick pointed out that the kernel update might delete the driver so we held our breaths and waited. The system rebooted and gave me a login prompt. And then a pretty cursor and then nothing but a black screen. Nick, luckily, was still here and was able to help. We did some research and found things that might have been...

Little cuteness has Ubuntu

After many many hours of trying to install Linux Mint on the Acer Aspire V5-122p, I enlisted the Linux  Mint expert at work. (Wave at Nick!) We spent additional hours after work trying to get Mint to work and failed. Horribly. He was as perplexed as I was as to why we couldn’t get Mint to work. (Maybe it had something to do with secure boot or EFI?) So… we tried Ubuntu 13.04...

Free lunging Kasane

When Kasane and I do serpentines free-lunging, I usually only have my carrot stick (4′ stick used for cues with a six foot lash). You are right in that most of the cues she is working from are body language and voice commands (walk, trot, reverse, etc.). You know how you can feel when your horse is hooked on when free lunging? It’s like that, except we are in the big arena and...

New little cuteness

I took the little Acer Aspire One D150 to gaming on Saturday night. I had spent hours on Friday night trying to figure out what was wrong with the computer and concluded that it wasn’t able to charge any more from the power cord. So. Several of the guys at the gaming group are sys admins, so I let them look at the D150 too. They concluded that it was dead as well....

Little netbook is dead

My little Acer Aspire One D150 has officially died. Can’t get it to boot and not sure what’s wrong with it. It’s dead dead dead. I’ll have to pull the hard drive and RAM and reformat it to remove any old data. I’m just glad that I don’t use anything local. It’s all backed up on cloud storage. I’m kinda annoyed because I spent a lot of quality time with it lately. Once...
