New Precious: Samsung Galaxy Note 2

I was bad. Couldn’t resist the precious. Told one of my friends at work about the Note 2. We’ve both been talking about replacing our trusty Android phones. It’s funny how all you have to do is mention quad-core, lots of usable RAM for applications, and 64 GB microSD support, and suddenly someone is keenly interested in the phone. 🙂 We both went to the T-Mobile store after work and are now the...

No SD cards in Nexus phones to confuse users

The specs for the LG Nexus 4 sound great: quadcore Snapdragon S4 Pro, 2GB internal RAM, lovely screen, Android 4.2. Allegedly different amounts of space will be available: 8 GB, 16 GB, etc. T-Mobile is offering the phone on their network, so I’m getting notices that I’m eligible for an upgrade… So I checked out the phone specs. Good specs, clean Android 4 OS (no “enhanced UI” slapped on by a manufacturer). Only...

Phone wierdness

I have a T-Mobile G2 (HTC Desire Z) for 18 months or so and have been very happy with. It’s my first Android phone (version 2.3.3). My favorite part of the phone is that it has a physical keyboard and comes with (almost) stock Android. No funky manufacturer overlay on it like you have with most HTC, Samsung, or Motorola Android phones. My keyboard quit working today. I opened the phone to slide...

Geekery at work

I work with a bunch of system administrators. For a geek like me, it’s a great opportunity to get to play with the latest technologies and learn from experts. (Okay, so I don’t get to play with the technology. I watch other people use the tech and I write about it.) A high priority ticket came in today for a Windows server that was partially booting and then coming up to a black...

Fraud warning: “Domain Notification” email

Over the weekend, I received two emails allegedly from support@codero.com stating that my domain, docboxconsulting.com, needed to be submitted to search engines. If you read the email quickly, it sounds like the domain needs to be renewed and I should fill out the form and fax it to the phone number provided before the offer expires. Um. No. I had all kinds of alarms going off. First off, what hosting company in their...

Resources for the Entourage Pocket Edge

When I first got the Entourage Pocket Edge, there was a good learning curve about what the device can and can not do — and how to hack it to make it do more things. More is good, right? Here are some useful links that I found. From the XDA Developers forum: Entourage Pocket Edge Quick Reference – Rooting, Installing Gapps, etc. From the Mobile Read forum: Resources for new Edge and Pocket...

Stupid printers are stupid

A few months ago, I bought a spiffy new all-in-one printer/scanner/fax: a Lexmark X7675 Professional from the discount table at CompUSA. The model was being phased out, and it looked like a reasonable buy. Price was good (we love half off) and the model had reasonable reviews. For the first five months, the printer worked flawlessly. No problems with duplex printing, scanning, copying… everything was fine. Two nights ago, my cat and I...

New tablet and keyboard

About a month ago, Woot had a special deal on a neat dual-screen tablet, the Entourage Pocket Edge. The Pocket Edge has a 7 inch Android tablet and a 6 inch eInk/ebook reader. The screens are hinged and fold together to the size of a medium paperback book. Makes for an interesting device. Originally, the device retailed for $200-$300. Woot had the Edge for $119. The catch? Entourage has discontinued production of the...

Seven years later…

The first blog post on Ceffyl.net was on April 11, 2004. At that time, I had two horses (Isis and Logan) and four cats (Basette, Ambush, Stella, and Kiesha). Seven years later, I have only one kitty and three horses. I started this blog as an outlet for dealing with the medical issues my cats and horse had. Basette, my sweet little black cat, was a diabetic who never responded to insulin treatment....

WordPress and new user registrations

Over the past few year, I’ve been getting 2-3 registrations on this blog per day with very few actual posts from the new users. The registrations are from automated spam bots trying to see if they can log onto the site and take over some functions. I sorted through the 1100+ users who had registered on this blog and removed the ones I thought were spam accounts. I may have removed a real...

Installing PloneSoftwareCenter on Plone 4

In addition to the Plone Help Center, I also wanted to have PloneSoftwareCenter for project management capabilities. The normal method for installing PloneSoftwareCenter is to add Products.PloneSoftwareCenter to the eggs = section of the zinstance/buildout.cfg file in the Plone installation. Trying to build and then run Plone, I ended up adding three additional lines to the buildout.cfg. I’m not sure why these dependencies were not automatically added. Figuring out dependencies Each time I...

Installing Plone Help Center on Plone 4

Over the past few days I’ve been trying to install Plone Help Center module on a Plone 4 installation running on a Mac OS X 10.6.5 server. Plone Help Center is the module used to run the Plone documentation and support center. The module comes with predefined FAQ, How-to, Tutorial, Reference Manuals, Error Reference, Links, Glossary Definitions. PHC will work with Plone 4 if you install PHC as a development egg using the...

Installing Plone 4 on Mac OS X 10.6 Server

Plone 4 is an open source content management system (CMS). It’s an elegant, extensible solution for document and content control. Large companies, including Apple, use Plone. I’m evaluating CMS solutions and was pleased to find that Plone has a Mac OS X installer. I tried to install the OS X installer and chose the local installation option. The installation process never completed. About halfway through the installation process I received the following error...

Only one file disappears

Only the header image collage I made of the girls disappears. The current header image has remained for several days. Suffusion theme hates the banner image I created. Not sure if it was the size, the file format or what. Every night the file disappeared. (Gremlins in the server!) The current banner is Isis running. The picture was taken on one of her first times out in a big pasture after her colic...

Disappearing files

I loaded the site today and my banner image had disappeared. No idea why. The file can’t be found on the server. It’s very strange. I haven’t logged in or edited the site in a few days. Not sure what happened. I’ve replaced the collage with a backup header image. This is very strange. I wonder what might have caused this… If the current file disappears, then I’ll put in a trouble ticket...
