ChaCha Search Engine

I just tried seaching for Epona using a new search engine, ChaCha. Interspersed with the results were sponsored ads posing as search results. That really ticked me off. If I want to see ads, then put them on the side, but do not confuse the frickin’ ads in with the actual search results. I do not recommend this search engine at all. Related Images:

Store from ancient Pompeii reopens

Now here is an heirloom seed seeker’s daydream: an herbal shop has reopened in Pompeii. Their stock includes seeds and plants that might have been offered at the herbal shop in the same location two thousand years ago. The new store, a product of a collaboration between biologists, botanists, archaeologists, and others, is discussed in an online English-language article in ANSA, an Italian newspaper: Pompeian plants for sale Herbalist’s shop opens in archaeological...

Followup on Feast of Epona

The search for the source of the ‘Feast of Epona’ on June 13th continues. The topic came up again on another mailing list I’m on. This lead to some more topic searches to try and track down the source. I tried to find the source of this using both a Google and Amazon (‘Look Inside’) search. Of the two pages of hits on a search for ‘Feast of Epona’, none of them cited...

Feast of Epona in June?

I was answering an email about Epona and a feast date on June 13th. This date seems a litle strange to me. I’ve heard of it before, but haven’t found any real supporting evidence. Many of the sites where this date is listed state that it is the “Celtic” feast of Epona (as opposed to the Roman festival on December 18th). We do know from an inscription at Guidizzolo that Epona was honored...

Visit to Rome

Well not for me (I wish!), but for my coauthor. This week he is in Rome for an EpiDoc conference. With any luck, he will return with photos of some of the find spots of some of the artifacts in our list. If he’s lucky, maybe he will even have time to visit the museum with the Equites singulares inscriptions (assuming they are on display). It’s a funny thing, thinking about being in...

Chariot find is a victory for Scots

Interesting that so many of the chariot burials found in the UK have been in Yorkshire (19 total, all of them, except for one found near Edinburgh , according to this article). No pictures in the article, unfortunately. 2400 year old grave. Chariot find is a victory for Scots by Martin Wainwright, Thursday March 10, 2005 The Guardian The centuries-long tussle for prestige between England and Scotland may be about to end in...

Google weirdness

This is very strange. Epona.net went from being ranked fourth on Google (keyword search for “epona”) to not even appearing in the listings! Apparently, the algorythms used to calculate page rank have been modified again and lots of people have lost their rankings. Now some pages with more misinformation then concrete information about Epona have top billing. This is frustrating. Yes, the site’s metadata is done properly. Related Images:

Pictures of Roman Re-enactment

Back in October, I went to a Roman re-enactment at the Parthenon in Nashville. In addition to the re-enactment, Champion One Productions was filming a trailer for their upcoming film, “The Charioteer.” Quite a few people attended. Some unedited, unlabeled pictures are available. (Some of the images are pretty large.) Several legions were there, including Legion XXIV. One of the highlights of the day was seeing a reconstruction of a Roman cavalry saddle...

EPONA.net: Web site updated!

My co-author visited from May 14-25. During that time, we worked on the artifact catalog and on reorganizing and rewriting several pages on the Web site. (Thank you to everyone who provided feed-back. It was very helpful!) The updates are now live. Comments and suggestions are welcome. EPONA.net, A Scholarly Resource Related Images:
