Breezy’s ride on 30 Dec 2019

My riding instructor has been riding Breezy once or twice a week since Kasane isn’t ready for lessons yet. We opted to put Kasane’s lesson and ride times towards Breezy. These rides have been a tremendous help for Breezy. She’s learning how to canter with someone who has far more confidence than me when cantering. This confidence is so important for a green horse. And Breezy looks so cute! Her trot has come...

Goopy, gunky nose on Kasane

Today, when I went to the barn I noticed that she had a serious runny nose. No cough, no fever, nothing that would indicate an infection like yellow, smelly discharge. Acting normal, except for the amount of green goo oozing from her nose all over her hay pile. There were green flecks in the ooze like specs of grass. Gross. Her appetite is normal. Everything seems fine. I took her on an easy...

Kasane approved for rehab riding

Kasane’s lameness from her shoulder injury is almost completely gone. She is moving so much better. You can still see a little bit of an off movement on her front right but only barely. It’s hard to tell if that is her shoulder or if it is a lef over from her perpetual lameness when lunged from the suspensory ligament injury in 2016. I took this video today and sent it to my...

Update on Kasane

She is definitely feeling better and is moving around a lot more. She even cantered along the fence when I brought her hay. My friend at the barn helped me take a video of Kasane at the walk and trot. She’s gimpy at the trot, especially when slowing down to the walk. She’s completely off of pain killers now. Sorry about the video being at odd angles. I opted to upload the video...

Third vet visit for Kasane

We finally know what is going on with Kasane. My regular vet was out today and used an ultrasound machine on Kasane’s leg. There is a tendon that goes through the point of the shoulder on a horse. The X-rays showed that Kasane did something to damage this area. The tendon is inflamed and will need about a month or so to heal. She probably also pinched a nerve on top of that....

Less gimpy Kasane

So it is two days out, and she is looking so much better. I feel incredibly relieved. She’s walking and even trotting out in her field. She’s gimpy but feeling so much better than she was Tuesday night. Still gimpy, dragging the front right a little, but major improvement from where she was. Related Images:

Gimpy Kasane is a good Kasane

I barely slept last night. I didn’t want to go to bed because I was too stressed thinking about Kasane’s mystery lameness and possible fracture. The implications of what a fracture means for an animal that lives by having four stable legs. So, first the good news. The barn owner texted me this morning to let me know Kasane had moved around the field some. Yay! That means the odds of this being...

Kasane has a serious issue

It is strange that my last post was about losing a horse because I got a warning about that with Kasane today. About 4:30, the barn owner called and said Kasane wasn’t putting any weight on her front right foot. She was holding it up and not moving forward. She ate her dinner but she wasn’t walking around. She had not moved the 10 feet to eat her hay. Highly unusual for a...

Riding lesson joy with Kasane and Breezy

It has been a long road with Kasane’s various leg issues and our lesson today felt like a triumph over all of those things. She was bouncy, had hang time in her trot, picked up her canter leads really well. She just felt great. It was one of our most exciting lessons just for the sheer joy of riding her. My mom was there and thankfully recorded some snippets of our lessons. Kasane’s...

On the loss of a horse

A person I greatly respect lost one of her old mares today. My friend sat up all night in the rain and the mud with her mare until the vet could arrive. Ultimately, there was nothing that could be done except make a very difficult decision… and let the mare go. I felt my heart break when I read her Twitter feed and Facebook posts from last night through today. Saying “I”m so...

Playing catchup

Life has been hectic, to say the least. The new job I started in January has been good, but it’s a lot more time and focus than my previous gig. Also more travel: I’ve visited Miami, Malaga in Spain, and soon San Francisco. No complaints. It is fun and interesting work, if a bit stressful and chaotic. Combine work with riding and gaming, and well, that’s my week without too much time set...

Long time no type

It’s been a very long, muddy winter. And fall, and most of the previous summer too. I had a curious confluence of events that kept me feeling slightly overwhelmed. You know, that feeling where you are juggling everything but can not add one more ball to the mix without dropping everything. So I didn’t blog. I have a lot of things to write about, including Kasane, Breezy, kitties, old job, new job, more...
