Week six of rain and rain rot

I can barely keep up with the rain rot on Kasane and Rajiyyah — much less help them heal when the rain keeps coming down. They are kept in some times, but that doesn’t help because the rain may come up in the middle of the night. I can’t put a sheet on them because that will just keep reinfecting them by getting the fungus on the rain sheet and then rubbing it...

Summer grooming time

It was raining when I went to the barn. No riding or working in the rings because of the mud so I spent the afternoon brushing and loving on Rajiyyah and Kasane. They are both shedding their summer coats. Rajiyyah kept nuzzling me over the top of the stall door. Both Kasane and Rajiyyah have rain rot. Kasane has it all along her spine from her whithers to her croup. Rajiyyah has it...

Rain rot on the mares

Both girls have rain rot really bad and it’s driving me nuts. Kasane’s back is so sore from rain rot that she flinches when my finger tips lightly touch her. Poor baby. The dew poisoning on Rajiyyah’s legs are at least looking better. The scabs still hurt even when I’m gently cleaning or putting salve on them. She holds up her back leg and moves it forward then reaches around her head to watch...

Claimed again

Two weeks ago when Mom brought down her two mares, all of the mares on Rajiyyah’s aisle of the barn were getting attention except Rajiyyah. She was very jealous. I stepped into her stall to groom her. She looked so happy to have the attention. The second I turned around and looked at Liyah, Rajiyyah flattened her ears and shook her head. As soon as I turned back around to Rajiyyah her ears...

Farrier on Saturday

Yesterday the farrier did Prize, Kasane, and Rajiyyah. Prize has a regular trim. Kasane and Rajiyyah both get front shoes. Rajiyyah is a pro at it, but this was Kasane’s third or fourth pair. Before the farrier arrived, I gave Kasane some Quietex (contains L-Triptophan, think same mellowing agent in turkey). We went into the ring and lunged for about 20 minutes to help her work off any extra energy. She was a...

Bye-bye OS X, hello Mint Linux

I reinstalled OS X on the Acer Aspire One D150 and had it running 10.6.3. I left it running (plugged in) while I had dinner. I came back to check on it an hour or so later and it was stuck in a reboot loop. It looked like it had tried to hibernate and then rebooted, tried to restore the hibernated session, and then rebooted. Rinse and repeat. I tried a lot of...

Taking the Acer Aspire One D150 to OS X 10.6.8

I’ve had to reinstall OS 10.6.3 several times because after every time I’ve done the update to 10.6.5, restored the kexts as instructed, I’ve ended up with the dreaded white screen error where I can’t do anything on the system. This indicates a kext problem with the graphics. I’ve tried removing and replacing the kexts, with no luck. I’m going to skip 10.6.5 and try going directly to 10.6.8. Reinstalling 10.6.3 has been straightforward...

Free to ride!

I saw the physical therapist today. He said that typically a calf injury like mine takes about three weeks total to heal from the last time it was injured. (So I’m halfway through that time.) The best thing? I’m cleared to ride. Yay! Kasane is going to be so happy. She was bouncing around over the weekend. So much energy because I haven’t been able to do much with her. She’s had rain...

New mares at the barn

Mom brought down two of her mares to board at my barn. The new girls are Cedars KenyaCatchMe (Botswana x Cedars Farah Moniet) and RSA Sahra Nazeem (BB Akeem x Ilehnisa Azeem). Kenya is Kasane’s half sister by the same sire. Kenya is also Rajiyyah’s sister with the same dam. Sahra has some similar blodlines to all Kenya, Rajiyyah, and Kasane. You might say she is their second or third cousin on the...

Hackintoshing the Acer Aspire One D150

I have had a little netbook (bless it’s heart) that has tried to be my little buddy on trips. Unfortunately, it has had Windows XP on it and I have less than love for that particular operating system. My work machines and my desktop system are all Macs. I’ve been wanting to put OS X on the netbook, because nothing is cuter than a little 10″ screen with OS X. Last time I...

Follow-up on HRW

A few days ago, I posted about my experiences trying to get information about a condo from the company managing the community’s HOA. This company is HRW, Inc. I called the phone number of the person listed on the “Purchaser’s Research Package” screen and left a message. She called me back the next morning and asked me to email a list of my questions to her. She said she couldn’t answer my questions...

Pulled my right calf muscle

I’ve been doing more running and enjoying a fitness game called “Zombies, run!” It’s been the only thing that has had me out running and walking just to listen to story lines. Lots of fun. Great motivation. I’ve always been a sprinter when I did run. The longest I could run when I was on track was a half mile. On a really really good marathon day I could run one mile. If...

Poem: Toys

Deaths seem to be hanging in the air this month. Two of my friends are dealing with the deaths of their fathers. One of them loved their father, the other not so much. Lots of conflicting emotions. It’s been many years since my Dad died. I still miss him, especially around Father’s Day. This poem was written the day he died (October 1, 1994). I didn’t have a phone at the time, so...

HRW as a Home Owner’s Association management company

I have been looking at houses and condos for a few months. Whenever my Awesome Agent and I look at a condo or townhouse with a home owner’s association (HOA), we ask these questions: What does the HOA cover and what is the owner responsible for? How often are repairs, pest inspections, property maintenance (like painting, for example) done? How often are dues increased? Have any special assessments been made in the recent...

Linux from a USB stick

I’ve been researching how to run Linux from a USB stick and was amazed at the options. The best one I’ve found is the Linux Live USB creator, which is great but only runs from Windows. Not so good since I have a Mac at home. Other friends here at work have suggested looking at Pen Drive Linux. Lots of good options, again for Windows. I’m just going to boot my Windows VM...
