Stella’s vet appointment

December 31st, 2008, posted in Cats

Stella got fluids today — and had some good news! She lost a few ounces last week. Today she was back up to 5 pounds. It’s a gain of one or two ounces, but that’s a lot for a little cat.

Stella has been surprisingly good for her fluids. She knows we’re trying to help her. She isn’t happy about it, but she doesn’t fight when she has fluids either. She plays like a kitten the evening after she has her fluids.

She definitely seems to be feeling better today. I’m not sure why she didn’t feel well over the weekend.

Stella eating more

December 30th, 2008, posted in Cats

Finally. Stella had her fluids on Friday and then didn’t eat much… but today she started eating again. (Yay!) A friend of mine at Phydeaux pet store suggested a trial size of Call of the Wild no-grain cat food.

Stella’s pickiness has rubbed off on Ambush. For the first time ever, Ambush is refusing to eat his dry food. He prefers Stella’s Fromm to his own Indigo Moon. He even snubbed a new bag. Ambush only wants to eat the Fromm and now the Call of the Wild.

I’ve also picked up a bag of the Innova EVO the cats were on a few years ago. He will eat that a little (so will Stella). They will end up with a mixture of the Call of the Wild and the Innova EVO. Maybe that will work…

A Digital Eye of Horus for Archaeologists

December 29th, 2008, posted in Archaeology

As technology evolves at an increasingly rapid rate, the study of ancient sites is aided by some of its developments. One such tool that has leaped into the hands of Egyptlogists and Archaeologists in recent years is the satellite. A great boon to any study of a site is the ability to view an area from above.

Getting Stella to eat

December 29th, 2008, posted in Cats

DSCF0683.JPGGetting Stella to eat is not an easy task. This weekend she didn’t want to eat much of anything. I’m not sure what to do. She is drinking well, but she doesn’t want to touch the wet kitten food, her Fromm dry food, Ambush’s food, the tuna cat food from Trader Joe’s, or the other various things I’ve tried. She hasn’t touched anything that I’ve seen since Saturday.

She’s tried to eat Ranch veggie dip (not good) and has eaten a little bit of lunch meat. That’s it. We will see what she’ll eat tonight. I’m going to pick up another flavor of the Fromm dry food and see if that helps. Maybe I’ll cook some eggs, lamb, and rice for her tonight.

I know she has lost weight again. Just when we finally broke through the 5 pound mark last week. For Stella, losing a few ounces is a big thing. I’m not sure what to do.

We have a vet appointment tomorrow for fluids. If Stella hasn’t eaten by then, we’ll see what they say.

Catching up

December 28th, 2008, posted in Cats, General, Horses

A lot has happened in the past few weeks. I’ll write some posts to catch up. Here’s the brief list:

  • New horse: Kasane is the primary reason why I have not been posting much on here. I’ll write a long post about here with pictures.
  • Stella: She has been fighting a urinary tract infection and appears to finally be over it. She’s also getting one pill per day for her high blood pressure. She isn’t happy about that.
  • Riding lessons: Isis and I have been working on whoa and dressage. We went on a trail ride and she didn’t want to stop.

Work has been busy, but good.

That’s it, in brief.

Dalek Christmas tree

3116732665_11f7967f81Someone had a lot of time on their hands and put it to good use this holiday season! The tree at right is the creation of x Plastic Neurospasta who posted picture on Flickr. Any fans of Doctor Who will instantly recognize the Dalek, complete with blue orbs and glowing eye.

If you look carefully between the branches, there is a white tree underneath. The picture, and several others of the tree, are available at x PLASTIC NEUROSPASTA’s photostream on Flickr.

The comments on the Flickr page have some great quotes, among them: “Redecorate! Redecorate!” Heh. Classic.

Here is a video of the tree:

Stella doing better

December 26th, 2008, posted in Cats

Stella finally seems to be doing better. After two courses of trying to give her Clavamox antibiotic twice per day (and her successfully avoiding it 25% of the time), the vet gave her an injectible antibiotic that lasts for two weeks. The dose is determined by the cat’s weight, so it has the potential to be expensive. At five pounds, Stella’s dose was cheaper than one run of Clavamox.

Every few weeks, Stella quits eating whatever food is offered to her. I’ve been through a lot of dry and wet cat foods trying to find something she likes and is okay for a cat with kidney problems.

She is currently eating two dry foods made by Fromm: Salmon a la Veg and Grain-free Surf and Turf. The Surf and Turf has a higher protein level (which isn’t great for Stella) however, because the dry food does not have grains, Ambush can also eat it. (Unfortunately Ambush prefers the Surf and Turf to his Indigo Moon grain-free dry food.)

Translation fail: Out of office oops

December 20th, 2008, posted in Geekitude, Just Silly

A friend of mine sent me this picture of what happens if you expect a translation and instead get back an automated email response. We’re in the middle of getting some documents translated at work, so this was extra funny to me.

Sadness: Majel Roddenberry passes

December 19th, 2008, posted in Geekitude

From a Yahoo news article:

The ever-present voice of the computer in Star Trek television series and films passes away just two weeks after completing her voice over work for J.J .Abrams upcoming Star Trek film.

Mrs Roddenberry may be remembered best for her role of Nurse Chapel in the original Star Trek series. She also gave voice to the computer on most of the Star Trek series and movies. She played Lwaxana Troi, Deanna Troi’s mother in Star Trek: Next Generation. She also appeared on Deep Space Nine.

Safe journey, Mrs Roddenberry.
