TARDIS MAME Console
July 30th, 2008, posted in Geekitude, TechSimon Jansen, of www.asciimation.co.nz, has built an incredible replica of a TARDIS (Time and Relative Dimensions in Space, Doctor Who’s time machine), complete with a fold-out MAME console for playing retro arcade games.
The TARDIS MAME console is obviously a work of love and art. The attention to detail is amazing.
Me likey!
While you are visiting Mr. Jansen’s site, check out the ascii animation of Star Wars.
If you really want some technical information on the TARDIS, check out the TARDIS Type 40 User Handbook.
LaTeX replacement
July 29th, 2008, posted in Geekitude, Just SillySlashdot had an interesting discussion on LaTeX, a document markup and typesetting system used mainly by scientific and mathematical publications. LaTeX is complex and hard to setup but offers powerful tools (most of which do not have a reasonable substitute).
Admist the conversations (and jokes about latex verses polyurethane), was this little gem of a joke:
I asked a mathematician how to solve constipation and he said, “Work it out with a pencil.”
So I did.
I’m just glad I didn’t ask an engineer or I’d have had to use a slide rule.
Motives for shooter
July 28th, 2008, posted in GeneralAn article on WBIR quoted results from the search warrant:
“Adkisson stated that he had targeted the church because of its liberal teachings and his belief that all liberals should be killed because they were a ruining the country, and that he felt that the Democrats had tied his country’s hands in the war on terror and they had ruined every institution in America with the aid of major media outlets.”
Other articles (see UU World and WATE) also mention Adkisson’s dislike for liberal media, the liberal movement in general, and also homosexuals. (Interesting that this isn’t mentioned on WBIR’s articles.)

Update on Shooting
July 28th, 2008, posted in GeneralThe shooting story was picked up by the Associated Press and even people at work this morning had heard about the shooting. Here are some additional stories:
- On UUWorld Web site: Two Unitarian Universalists killed in church shooting (Added Monday 8:00 PM
- On WATE TV6: Faith Under Fire section on the shootings (Added Monday 7:59 PM)
- On WBIR: Search warrant: Adkisson admits church shooting, motives (Added Monday, 7:47 PM)
- On Knoxville News Sentinel: Church shooting: 2nd victim dies; authorities search accused man’s house
- On WBIR (Knoxville TV station): Timeline: Church service marred by gunfire
- On Yahoo: Man charged in Tenn. church shooting that killed 2
- On CNN: Church shooting suspect angry over job search, police say
The best information will probably be found on the local TV stations (WBIR, WATE) and newspapers (Knoxville News Sentinel) for Knoxville.
More recent news stories are claiming that the suspect chose TVUUC because he perceived it as a “liberal” organization. He blamed liberals for his frustration over not being able to find a job.
If you find additional articles, please post them here.
Sigh. I feel kinda helpless with my friends in Knoxville and not being able to do anything concrete. I’ve offered prayers and let other people know… but that’s about all I can do.
Shooting at TVUUC
July 28th, 2008, posted in GeneralIf you haven’t heard, there was a tragic shooting at the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church in Knoxville during the morning service.
Summary: A man, wielding a shotgun, entered the TVUUC building during the morning service and fired several times, injuring eight or nine people. The gunman was brought down by congregation members. All of the victims were taken to the hospital; two later died. A suspect has been taken into custody and will appear before a judge on August 5.
Two friends of mine and their families were at the Church when the shooting took place. They are both safe, thankfully.
Please offer prayers, candles, and hope for the families and community as they deal with this tragedy.
City League for Show Jumping
July 26th, 2008, posted in HorsesSaturday the Knoxville News Sentinel posted an article about the City League sponsoring a competition in Knoxville featuring Grand Prix jumping taking place at the Civic Colliseum. The Knoxville Quickstars will be competing against teams from all over the place. It sounds great. Competitions rang from fences 2 feet to 5 feet high with timed and untimed courses. It sounds like a blast.
The semifinals are in Tryon, NC in October. I hope to be able to go and watch.
Two showings today
July 25th, 2008, posted in GeneralI still have the one offer on the house. The house is still being shown, which is good. It’s been two weeks since the last showing… and today I get a notice for two showings this afternoon at 4:00 and at 5:30. Funny how that works.
