iPhone at AT&T and Apple Stores

June 30th, 2007, posted in Tech

I used to be an AT&T Wireless customer, prior to the buyout of AT&T Wireless by Cingular (or the merging of the two companies, whichever way it actually happened). Any way, my plan with AT&T was much better than any Cingular offered. The AT&T Wireless experience was okay: helpful salesperson, excited about offering me a reasonable deal.

In July last year, I received a letter from Cingular stating that they were going to charge former AT&T Wireless customers a “service fee” starting in September if we didn’t change to a Cingular service plan. My contract was up at the end of July, so I began looking for a new wireless provider.

A friend recommended Verizon. I wasn’t sure exactly which provider to use, so I shopped around for providers and phones. I was interested in a GSM carrier, but Cingular was the only one available. T-Mobile doesn’t have a complete coverage area here. I went into a Cingular office and asked some questions (would unlocked phones work with the Cingular network, which GSM frequencies did they support (850, 1900, etc.), etc.).

The local rep in the Cingular store was clueless. He said no unlocked phones would work on the network (incorrect — you have to enter the network settings manually and the company won’t support the phones, but they WILL work). I was rather peeved with the guy. (Okay, thats an understatement.)

The latest rattle about the iPhone being sold at AT&T and Apple stores made me wonder about customers’ experiences with the buying experience. Imagine my surprise to find out that people who purchased phones at the AT&T stores were frustrated and annoyed at the experience. People who bought the phone at the Apple stores were pleased with the experience.

Article: A Tale of Two Companies

If the other Cingular/AT&T Wireless stores are anything like the one near my house, then their user expeiences will be horrible. Last summer I ended up going with Verizon because my friends used that network and because the salesperson understood mobile geek speak.

My current service with Verizon has been going downhill rather quickly. The phone has been okay. In fact, most of the time I’ve been very pleased with my phone. For the past two months, I’ve had dropped calls and horrible network connectivity at work. Usually, I would have 2-3 bars on my phone. Lately the phone cycles through 2-3 bars digital, to no service, to analog — so now I frequently have dropped calls, horrible call quality, etc.

So I’m looking for a new service provider. I would like to use an unlocked GSM phone. It won’t be AT&T Wireless, because of my experience with Cingular and because of AT&T’s policy of dealing with customer’s personal data.

Flooring

Got home today to find the first pieces of flooring in place. It looks great! I’ll have to post before and after pictures. Purty purty stuff. Can’t wait to see what the new vanity and faucet look like when they’re installed.

Not home for long… heading out to dance practise.

Solo?

Our troupe’s dance instructor threw me a curve ball today: she asked if I would like to do a solo. I’ve been interested in doing a solo, but have not considered that I was ready for one. I’d like to have a better repetoire of steps, for example.

Eep! So I have a week to come up with something.

What a night…

Okay, first the good news. The package I thought had been Banff’ed was actually sent to the dead letter center in Atlanta. That was one MAJOR screw up on the part of the post office. I went to the post office when the letter was supposedly still in the building. I was told (at the time) that the letter had been shipped back to Canada. Apparently, it was still in the building and was sent to Atlanta to the letter graveyard. I told my package woes to my regular carrier, who had been on vacation at the time when the package was initially delivered to my house. This time he had the package retrieved from Atlanta. By chance, I had checked the USPS tracking site to see where it was — and it showed the package had been delivered to Knoxville last Friday. Booked it to the post office, and about 20 minutes later had the package. Crazy. But good news.

I got home from the post office in a rush to meet a friend to go tile shopping. (I had to pick out tile, vinyl, a vanity/sink combo, and moulding tonight so the cleaning crew/carpenters could finish their work tomorrow.) I got home and found my washer and dryer out on my front yard covered in plastic. My deadbolt also wasn’t locked. The fish fountains were turned off. Grr.

I don’t have many nice things, but I did invest in a top-of-the-line clothes washer. And it was on my front porch where anyone could wheel it away. I could have sworn that I told the carpenter this morning to put the washer and dryer in the living room. A quick call there, and he agreed to come back out and put the washer and dryer in my living room. Very reasonable guy and was willing to work with me. I apologized for being a little snappy and explained the day had not been going well.

So from all of the fiascos I did get some good information. Apparently, if I found a .98/sq. ft. tile at Lowes I could replace the vinyl in hallway and foyer with tile. Oh yeah, I’m all about that! Much better than vinyl. So I kidnapped a friend and we went to Lowes. Found a nice vanity to replace the plain white one in the bathroom, a new faucet, and a nice warm ceramic tile. I’ll post pictures of all of the stuff tomorrow. I think it will look great. =)

My package has been Banff’ed

I think it’s lost and not coming back. I’m going to go to the post office today and make a claim. This is crazy. I should have gotten the package back long ago. For them to not have it and to not know where it is after this amount of time is insane.

I called the Banff hotel. They said that they would send the package back. The lady on the phone couldn’t wait to get off of the phone with me, didn’t want to check to see if it was there, and wouldn’t pay attention long enough. So screw that. I’ll have to turn in the receipt for the package and just hope that it isn’t too late to have payment on the insurance. Glad I did get it insured.

Bizarre Dreams

June 25th, 2007, posted in General

I must have had a strange dream last night: I woke up singing a song I learned in elementary school (“Senior Don Gato”–yup, song about a cat). Very bizarre. I haven’t thought about that song in years. Funny what you remember.

Oh Senior Don Gato was a cat
On a high red roof Don Gato sat
He was there to read a letter
meow meow meow
where the reading light was better
meow meow meow
‘Twas a love note for Don Gato

I adore you wrote the lady cat
who was fluffy white and nice and fat
there was not a sweeter kitty
meow meow meow
in the country or the city
meow meow meow
and she said she’d wed Don Gato

Oh Don Gato jumped so happily
He fell off the roof and broke his knee
broke his ribs and all his whiskers
meow meow meow
and his little solar pliskers (plexus)
meow meow meow
A caramba! cried Don Gato

All the doctors all came on the run
Just to see if something could be done
They held a consultation
meow meow meow
about how to save their patient
meow meow meow
how to save Senior Don Gato

But in spite of everything they tried.
Poor Senor Don Gato up and died.
O it wasn’t very merry,
meow meow meow.
Going to the cemetery,
Meow Meow Meow.
For the ending of Don Gato

When the funeral passed the market square
Such a smell of fish was in the air,
Though his burial was slated,
meow meow meow
He became reanimated,
meow meow meow
He came back to life, Don Gato.

Way Too Early

June 25th, 2007, posted in General

I am not a morning person. Never have been, never will be. I have missed two hours’ worth of sleep this morning to meet the cleaning people at my house. Sigh. Really tired.

I know, it’s not technically that early, but when it’s two hours earlier than what you are used to getting up, that’s early.

Sequestered Felines

June 25th, 2007, posted in Cats

The kitties have been locked in my second bedroom for the past week and half. I’ve been worried about them getting into the fans and humidifiers the cleaning crew brought. These kitties are completely spoiled: their room has a cat tower for climing up to a window, three cat beds (including a new one for Stella), and an available window and ledge for each adored feline.

Unhappy kitties. Ambush hasn’t been very happy about being locked up. He has been pulling out his hair more than usual. Stella has not been eating well. She has lost weight. I have to pet her and then watch her eat. Even then, she won’t eat a full meal. Kiesha gets upset that she doesn’t have as much attention, but she has adapted overall. No messes on the floor (at least not yet).

Ambush has been doing well on his insulin dose. He is getting two units twice per day. So far, so good. I need to take him back to the vet so he can have another checkup.

Dammit. Janet.

Ever feel like a deer in headlights? You get caught up in doing some activity, trying to correct some error, and you spend all day on it. It’s like some bizarre fascination that you just can stop once you’ve started it.

Wasted the entire friggin’ evening looking for information on MacJournal and WordPress. That really annoys me (see earlier note). I should have been reading other material and doing some writing. Not piddling around trying to configure a piece of software.

Stupid. Stupid. Stupid.

Now it’s late and the cleaning people will be here early in the morning to take up most of my flooring in the hallway, bathroom, laundry room. Another extension of home-ownership hell.

MacJournal Frustrations

June 24th, 2007, posted in Tech

Mariner Software, the publishers of MacJournal, have a great reputation. Many people love MacJournal. It’s highly recommended as desktop journaling and blogging software. A friend of my tried it and love it, so I bought it. According to the reviews I had read, MJ works with popular blogging software including WordPress. Sounded like a great way to have a local backup of the posts and be able to write drafts offline.

I have spent approximately six hours trying to get this software to work with my WordPress blog. I’ve read all over the net and have yet to find a comprehensive set of instructions for configuring a WP blog to work with MacJournal. Basically, the user manual included with the software suggests letting MacJournal auto-detect the blog settings. This is great if you are using a blog hosted at LiveJournal. Works like a charm.

Unfortunately, if you are using WordPress, no concrete information is available in the documentation. Other people on the Mariner Software support forums have said that they were able to get their WP blog to work with MJ without a problem. So what am I doing wrong?!
