Update on the Bushman

13 Mar

I took today off to take Ambush in to the vet’s. Excellent news! The vet was doing the happy dance. =) His glucose level remains within reasonable levels (189) even after one week of being off of insulin.

She said to bring him back in for a checkup every two weeks. If he stays at reasonable levels and doesn’t have any other changes (i.e., drinking too much water, weight loss), he can stay off of insulin.

She did caution me that some times cats will revert and will suddenly require insulin again. So far, though, he’s been awesome!

Performance tonight at World Grotto

Our performance is tonight at World Grotto! We’ve been practising for weeks. I hope it goes well! I’m also video taping everything. Should be fun =)

Workshop with Moria beforehand, too. I’ll be sore and happy.

Computer Issues

07 Mar

I think my portable is dying a slow, painful death. It now randomly will not boot properly. Upon rebooting, it hangs just after the RAM check for about a minute. An error message appears stating that there is a hardware failure (PXE-E61 to be exact) and to check the hard drive cable. Considering that the hard drive is located underneath the keyboard and the wrist rest of this portable, it is not a simple matter to check the cable. (And try Googling on Akoya LS Medion with that error message and you get precisely one hit — with some useless suggestions.)

There are a few things that might cause the error, assuming the error message is correct and it’s a hard drive-related issue. The hard drive might be dying. So far, the error checks I’ve done have not returned any errors (doesn’t necessarily mean anything). The disk is regularly defragged and cleaned. Maybe a new hard drive would resolve the problem. Not sure.

The problem might also be caused by the hard drive controller failing on the motherboard. This would be bad. Because the controller is integrated into the motherboard, correcting the problem would probably involve replacing the motherboard — the most expensive part of the portable. At this rate, because the machine is 1.5 years old, I would be better off replacing the portable instead of sinking money into a new motherboard.

The longer I’ve let this problem go, the worse it has gotten. It now regularly takes about 8 reboots before the machine loads Windows (instead of the afore-mentioned error message).

If checking the cables doesn’t resolve the issue, I’ll take the portable back to where I got it and ask their tech support to give me an estimate. If they can’t, then it’s time to get a new portable… but only after I’ve earned enough to get a new one without putting it on credit.

So what would I get? A Mac. I’m NOT using Windows Vista on any of my computers. No way in hell.

Visit with the Chiropractor

06 Mar

Both of my horses have a chiropractor who sees them regularly. (Most of my friends think I’m a little nuts because my horses get better medical care than I do.) The doctor came out today and had some excellent news about Isis and Rajiyyah.

Isis seems to be back in the shape she was before the surgery in August! Even though she still has soreness and stiff spots, they are in the same locations where she was sore/stiff prior to the surgery. Excellent. Now all I have to do is get her into shape. She has a huge hay belly.

Rajiyyah has also made really good progress. I haven’t had much of an opportunity to ride Rajiyyah over the past month due to rain rot and being sick. It turns out the time off has been really good for her. The doctor was delighted at how much Rajiyyah’s overall physical appearance has changed and how much more comfortable she seems. The stiffness that Rajiyyah had when the doctor started working on her in November is about 90% gone. Rajiyyah is still stiff in her neck, but that is a long-term item to work on.

Overall both kids are doing great. I’ve been having dreams about riding Isis again. Long walks up and down the pastures, trail rides… things to get her out and build her muscles. I am so looking forward to being back in the saddle!

Ambush on the Upbeat

05 Mar

AmbushThis past weekend I drove to NC to visit my sister for her birthday. Whenever I travel, I have to put Ambush, the White Wonder Cat(tm), into the kennel so he can receive his insulin shots. After my last trip to Mom’s in late January, the vet said that Ambush was doing well. His glucose tests were within the lower normal range. We reduced his dose from 4 to 3 units twice per day.

This last weekend was even better news. His glucose was 109 — low end of normal range. The vet suggested that we try taking him off of insulin entirely for a while and monitor him closely. This is excellent news! Maybe the White Wonder Cat is in diabetic remission (or whatever you call it).

Go Bushman, go!
